Welcome to the Westside, Canary! This hip new lounge setup for live music, stylized Instagram photos, and tropical drinks may just be what Santa Monica needs to attract a young upscale crowd. Since the crowd at the Bungalow has gone downhill and the Wilshire has since been repurposed into Fia, many loyal Westsiders have been without a local go-to option for a weekend night out. Canary has a casual warm tropical feel, and the space itself is large and open. The cocktail list is heavy on mezcal and rum-based drinks– the Gran Canaria is even served in an adorable canary-shaped glass. Let’s just say, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a crowd as big out in Santa Monica at 11:00 pm on a Thursday evening which is a good sign in my book.
